OPERA in BERLIN 18 - 23 April 2012


A return to the German capital for two new productions by Kasper Holten of Covent Garden and Christof Loy and conducted by the Deutsche Oper’s new music director Donald Runnicles. Also a rare revival and a challenging production at the Komische Oper.

We stay at an historic hotel close to Unter den Linden, ideally situated to walk around one of the most fascinating areas of Berlin.

Cost : £1050 includes 5 nights bed and buffet breakfast in twin-bedded room with private facilities, front stalls tickets for the 4 operas, transfers and excursions and interval meals on Thursday and Friday. Single supplement £180. Deposit £300pp.

Introductory coach tour of Berlin with the best guide in the city, an American art historian who has lived in Berlin for many years.

LOHENGRIN new production by Covent Garden supremo Kasper Holten conducted by Donald Runnicles. Petra Lang (Ortrud), Ricarda Merbeth (Elsa), Marco Jentzsch (Lohengrin).


Friday 20 April
Walk along Unter den Linden and visit some of the extraordinary new buildings including the award-winning British Embassy

RIENZI, LAST OF THE TRIBUNES – Wagner’s 1842 opera based on the Bulwer-Lytton novel and reduced to 3 hours for the 2010 production that was well received and is now available as a DVD. Torsten Kerl and Manuela Uhl lead the cast


Saturday 21 April
The Museum Island - greatest assembly of museum buildings and collections in the world

JENUFA new production by Christof Loy of Janacek’s masterpiece conducted by Donald Runnicles with Michaela Kaune and Jennifer Larmore leading the cast.


Sunday 22 April
More galleries and a walk through the theatre and Jewish district.

SALOME a production of Richard Strauss’ opera that aimed to shock when first given at the Komische Oper in 2011, according to the critics at least. We have front row seats in this delightful small neo-rococo theatre.
